There may never be a conclusive
argument, either for or against
globalization, as emerging events show
that globalization has both advantages
and disadvantages. Simply put,
globalization means closer
interconnections of people of diverse
interests and culture, increased
international travels and thus
exchanges in political and leadership
styles, values, orientation, etc. The 8th edition of Under
the BAOABAB Tree that especially
discusses the various sides of
globalization - Implications
for Women’s Human Rights.

Fundamentalisms are gaining strength
in many countries, manifesting in
control over women’s sexuality, bodies,
family relationships, movement, dress
codes, and participation in public, etc.
Fundamentalist forces are gaining undue
influence in setting social norms and
architecture; dominating everyday facets
of life; defining laws (in particular family
laws) which mostly impact on women;
controlling the media; influencing
national policy-makers and international
institutions; undermining human rights
institutions and norms; putting religion
and other patriarchal notions at the
center of state business; increasing the
dominance of religion in public life; and
undermining spaces for plurality and
dissent.
In this 6th edition, there are articles on
Trends in Growing Religious Conservatism
and Fundamentalism: The Impact on
Women, The Role of Text Interpretation
in Religion Fundamentalism: Questions for
Consideration amongst others..
We hope you will find this edition
interesting!

This report was prompted by the fact
that the Nigerian state report
covering 1986-1994, did not depict
accurately the implementation of
CEDAW, nor the status of Nigerian
women. Therefore, the NGO CEDAW
Coalition decided to take immediate
action and write an alternative NGO
report in response.
